The best ways to search your Chrome history

Checked 26 October 2026. We make historoo, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

There’s no single best history tool. It depends on what you remember about the thing you’re looking for, and how far back it was. Here are the options worth knowing, with what each one does well.

1. Chrome’s own history

Press Ctrl+H (⌘+Y on a Mac) and type. It searches the titles and addresses of pages you’ve visited, and keeps about 3 months. If you remember the site or a word from the title, start here. It can’t find a page by what was on it, like a photo.

2. Chrome’s AI history search

Turn it on in Settings › AI innovations. From then on, Chrome keeps the text of pages you visit on your computer and lets you search by description, like “that article about cheap flights to Lisbon”. It shows up to three best matches. Google says it’s only available in the US with Chrome in English, so most people outside the US won’t see it.

3. Better History

A free extension that replaces Chrome’s history page with a more capable one. It adds a date picker, regular expression search, deleting by day, site or keyword, automatic cleanup and CSV export, in 18 languages. It works on Chrome’s existing history, so it’s useful from day one. It finds pages the same way Chrome does, by title and address. We compare it with historoo in historoo vs Better History.

4. History Trends Unlimited

A free extension that copies Chrome’s history into its own database on your computer, so it isn’t lost after 3 months, and draws charts of your browsing habits. It’s a good choice if you mainly want to keep your history for longer, or see where your time goes. Like Chrome, it searches by title and address.

5. historoo

historoo is ours. It saves the pictures, videos and headlines that were on your screen while you browse, reads what each picture shows on your computer, and lets you search by what you remember: “red car”, “latte art”, “the cat on the chair”. You can also search with a picture, or right-click one anywhere on the web and ask where you’ve seen it before.

Free keeps the last 7 days, with no account. Pro keeps everything for as long as you like, syncs between your computers through your own Google Drive, encrypted, and is free during the beta. It starts saving when you install it, so it can’t find things from before that.
