How to find a picture you saw online again
Checked 26 October 2026. We make historoo, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.
You remember the picture clearly: a red car, a dog in a raincoat, a kitchen you liked. You don’t remember the site. Here’s why that’s hard, and what you can do about it.
Why your history can’t find it
Browser history saves the title and address of each page, nothing else. If you search it for “dog in a raincoat”, it only finds pages with those words in the title. A photo on a page called “r/aww” or “Gallery 4 of 12” won’t come up.
If you still have the picture, or one like it
- Reverse image search. In Chrome, right-click a picture and choose Search with Google Lens, or upload one at Google Lens or Bing Visual Search. It finds where the picture, or ones like it, appear on the web.
- Check your Downloads and screenshots. If you saved it or took a screenshot, the file name or date can point you to when you saw it.
If you only remember it
- Think about where you were. Social feeds, news sites and shopping sites are the usual places. Each has its own saved, liked or recently viewed list worth checking: Reddit, Instagram, Pinterest and most shops do.
- Narrow it down by day. If you know roughly when, scroll your browser history to that day and open the likely pages again.
- Describe it to an image search. Search for what it showed and switch to the Images tab. It sometimes works for photos that were widely shared.
Search pictures by what they show
historoo was made for exactly this. As you browse, it saves the pictures, videos and headlines that were on your screen for at least a second, and works out what each picture shows, on your own computer. Later, type what you remember, like “red car” or “dog raincoat”, and it shows every match, with the page you saw it on and when.
It can also search the other way round. Right-click any picture on the web and choose Where have I seen this? to find the times you’ve come across it, or use More like this on a result to find similar ones. With Pro, it also reads words written in pictures, so “wifi password” finds the photo of the router sticker.
It can’t find pictures from before you install it. Free keeps the last 7 days. Pro keeps everything for as long as you like and is free during the beta.
